Anyone who has ever been to a karaoke bar or attended an event with karaoke is probably aware that some songs are more popular than others. These are songs that get just about everybody singing along loudly and proudly. They manage to both get the night rolling and bring it to a close. They’re old school songs that we just can’t help but sing along to and get excited about. At least, they are when there’s a crowd around; when we’re on our own, we don’t care nearly as much. Here are five of these overplayed, but still cherished, songs.

“Build Me Up Buttercup“ – The Foundations
“Build Me Up Buttercup” is a song I don’t ever recall learning but have somehow always known the words to. It’s been a go-to in my family for years, but I never realized how popular it is among others as well. Yet, over the years, I’ve discovered that this song is everywhere.
It’s no surprise, really. Singing along to this song is a blast. It’s got a great vibe to it, and the words are simple to learn. If you’re not already aware of “Build Me Up Buttercup”, now is the time to add it to your repertoire.
“Don’t Stop Believin’“ – Journey
“Don’t Stop Believin’“ is one of the most iconic karaoke songs in existence. It’s perfect for singing along. You can belt it out without worrying how you sound because everybody else will be doing the exact same thing. Go to any gathering and turn this song on, and you’ll hear cheers of excitement and recognition almost immediately.
Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond
Singing along to “Sweet Caroline” wouldn’t be complete without interpretive dance moves. Well, at least acting out the “hands touching hands” line. It’s too good of an opportunity to pass up. Although, I guess it could be just my crazy family that always does this. However, I recommend it to everyone.
“Piano Man” – Billy Joel
Singing along to “Piano Man” is almost always enjoyable. I often find myself (and a few others) taking on a different tone to match that of Billy Joel’s. This song pulls it out of you even when you don’t mean to let it do so.
“Piano Man” is on par with “Don’t Stop Believin’” when it comes to people getting excited. Most people are familiar with it and want to sing it at the top of their lungs when it comes on. It slows things down, but in the best possible way.
“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” – Frankie Valli
Sadly, I had forgotten about “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” until I heard it the other day. Of the five songs on this list, this is probably my favorite. The music is phenomenal and easy to mimic with your voice, which makes singing along even more fun. Plus, the big band feel is unique and interesting. It’s an all-around great song that will easily get everyone singing along.
