As Veterans Day draws near, we turn our attention to the men and women who have served and continue to serve in our armed forces. We thank them for the sacrifices they’ve made and honor them for the hardships they’ve faced. Freedom does not come free, and whether we understand what the true cost is or not, we should show our appreciation for it and for the men and women who fight to keep it.
While some of us might know the entire history of Veterans Day, others may not even be sure what the day celebrates. As American citizens, however, it’s important for us to be aware of what this day is all about. Whether you’re an expert on the subject or you’re completely in the dark, please take a few moments to learn about or remind yourself of the history of Veterans Day and what it stands for.
A Brief History of Veterans Day
The video below gives a brief history of Veterans Day (also known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day) in the United States and throughout the world. You will learn how the holiday came to be and how it has changed over time. If you’re not aware of the history behind this day, this video will help bring you up to speed. Knowing the history will help you to better understand and appreciate what our veterans have done for us.
Honoring Our Veterans
Learning the history of this holiday is important, but it’s more important to take a moment to thank a veteran. Even better, take some time to sit down and have a conversation with someone who has served or is currently serving. Also, take some time to watch the video below to remind yourself of why Veterans Day is so important. Fair warning, it’s rather emotional and could move you to tears.
Support Our Veterans
Thanking and honoring our veterans is a beautiful thing to do. However, if you’d like to do more to show your support, there are certainly ways you can do so. Many foundations and charities are dedicated to helping veterans, which makes donating fairly easy. That being said, please do some research before you donate to make sure the money is actually going to help veterans. Consider donating to a local cause or volunteering for a veteran’s organization in your area, so you can be sure the veterans are receiving your support.
Our veterans have given so much for our country and have made it possible for us to live freely. This Veterans Day, let’s show them how much this means to us by making the day entirely about them. Let’s put aside our differences and celebrate the men and women who have fought hard to keep our country and its people safe. To each and every veteran, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
