For a long time, I’ve avoided listening to the radio (other than talk radio) because the same songs get played over and over again. As I drove across the country last week, however, I spent a decent amount of time listening to the radio. Not surprisingly, the same songs were constantly being played; only this time, they were all holiday songs. It made me think about how songs you enjoy listening to once or twice can become very annoying the more you hear them. These are a few of the holiday songs that I like until they become overdone and lose their appeal.

“Mele Kalikimaka” – Bing Crosby
It wasn’t until this year that I started to notice how often “Mele Kalikimaka” actually gets played. I honestly thought it was one of the lesser-known holiday songs, but I’ve been hearing it everywhere lately. I genuinely enjoy this song, but it gets stuck in your head like no other and becomes too much after a short amount of time.
“Jingle Bell Rock” – Mean Girls
This is another song that I love to listen to and sing along with but get sick of after hearing it for the umpteenth time. This scene from Mean Girls at least offers some comic relief.
“The 12 Days of Christmas” – John Denver and The Muppets
I would be perfectly content with only hearing “The 12 Days of Christmas” once per year. Though I must say, this version from The Muppets is most certainly my favorite. They manage to make the song entertaining rather than allowing it to drag on endlessly. Plus, Beaker’s line is marvelous.
“Holly Jolly Christmas” – Burl Ives
I had a tough time deciding if I should include “Holly Jolly Christmas” until I realized how often I had been hearing it. As far as overplayed holiday songs go, this one quite possibly takes the cake. I heard it at least five times while doing some Christmas shopping, and it got very obnoxious after awhile. This is unfortunate because it’s a great song.
“Jingle Bells” – The Partridge Family
All right, I know I said “Holly Jolly Christmas” might take the cake for overdone holiday songs, but I was wrong. I’m convinced that “Jingle Bells” has to be played at least once every hour in every store and on every station during the holidays. As much as I enjoy this song, I get tired of hearing it all the time. I will never understand why every recording artist seems to think they need to put out their own version.
Too Much, Too Much
All of these holiday songs really can be enjoyable to listen to when you hear them for the first time each year. It’s unfortunate that they’ve become so commonplace. At least you know it’s coming each year, so you can enjoy them in the quiet of your home before being bombarded by them in public.
