As I thought about what type of Christmas music I wanted to focus on this week, I found myself coming back to a certain theme – animation. It would once again appear that I’ve undertaken a task far more difficult than what I anticipated, though. Take a minute to think about how many animated features there are that focus on Christmas; now do you have a better idea of why this was so challenging? I had to narrow it down somehow, so these are all songs that were specifically written for an animated feature.

“Believe” – The Polar Express
I had a really hard time choosing between this song and “When Christmas Comes to Town.” As far as Christmas music in animation goes, the entire soundtrack from The Polar Express is actually pretty incredible. In the end, this song won for one simple reason: parts of it sound very similar to the opening theme from The Small One. This is a beautiful song, but reminding me of my favorite Christmas movie makes it that much better.
“You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” – How the Grinch Stole Christmas
You’d think for as much as I like this song I’d take the time to learn the actual words. I never have though. I know a few here and there, but I stumble over most of them. Luckily, this catchy tune can be easily hummed, which means knowing the words is optional.
“Christmas Time is Here” – A Charlie Brown Christmas
This is another one of those songs where you’d think I’d know the lyrics by now. Instead, I just sing, “Christmas time is here,” and then throw in a bunch of la, la, las to finish it off. I’ve noticed quite a few people do this, though, so I’m guessing I’m not the only one who doesn’t know the words. Instead of humming this one, though, I suggest whistling.
“What’s This” – The Nightmare Before Christmas
I was recently reminded of this enjoyable song, and I’m glad because it never really gets any attention around Christmas time. It’s not as traditional as other Christmas music, yet the entire song revolves around the holiday. As for The Nightmare Before Christmas, I’ve never really been sure if it should be considered a Halloween or Christmas movie. I do know that it’s a terrifying movie for small children, however.
“Snow Miser” and “Heat Miser” – The Year Without a Santa Claus
The tune of these two songs is one of the catchiest I’ve ever heard. It pops into my head very randomly and then sets up camp. As annoying as it can get after some time, it’s still an enjoyable tune. I’m particular to “Snow Miser” myself. I’ll take a white Christmas over a green Christmas any day.
Christmas Music Spurs the Christmas Spirit
Nothing gets you in the Christmas spirit more than a trip down memory lane, which is exactly what these songs sent me on. Animated features have a lot of Christmas music, so I know there are more that I’ve missed. Sadly, I can’t include them all. Well, I guess I could, but it would be a really long list. Though narrowing it down certainly was challenging. It probably didn’t help that I kept getting distracted by all the memories that surround these songs and the movies they’re in. I’m not complaining though.
“Ringle, Ringle” – Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol
While not strictly Christmas music, this song is featured in what I believe is one of the greatest versions of A Christmas Carol of all time. This movie has other songs that I personally enjoy more, but I had to choose this song for my dad. I think of him every time I hear it. I’ll let you come to your own conclusions as to why.
“When Christmas Comes to Town” – The Polar Express
I couldn’t help it; I had to include this song. It’s been consistently coming back to mind since I started coming up with this list, even after I’ve listened to every other song. This really is an incredibly beautiful and simple song.
