I adore oils. I use them for skin care, hair care, cooking, relaxation, oil pulling – the list goes on and on. This hasn’t always been the case, but I’m so glad it is now. For me, there’s no going back. Oils in general have improved my everyday life, but I want to talk about essential oils in particular.
Please keep in mind essential oils are powerful and should be used with care. While these oils can have amazing results, they can also have some nasty effects if you’re not careful. I’ve seen essential oils eat through plastic before so be sure to read any included instructions, do some research, and/or consult with your physician prior to use.

Uses for Essential Oils
When you first delve into the world of essential oils it can be overwhelming, to say the least. Many different cultures have used essential oils for thousands of years. They serve a variety of purposes ranging from household cleaning to alternative medicinal treatments. These uses include, but are not limited to:
- Oral hygiene
- Laundry freshener
- Pest repellant
- Air freshener
- Anxiety reduction
- Massage therapy
- Weight loss
- Stress relief
- Energy booster
I mainly use essential oils for aromatherapy, but I’ve been branching out as I learn more about them. For example, I recently learned that a drop of peppermint on your tongue does wonders to clear out your sinuses. Clove oil helps clean and whiten your teeth, while eucalyptus helps to clear congestion so you can breath easily. If you’re looking to for stress relief or to have a relaxing evening, then I recommend trying lavender oil. Draw yourself a hot bath, add a few drops of lavender to the water, sit back, and breathe deeply. You’ll be able to feel the stress of everyday life slipping away.
I’ve also used essential oils to help sooth sore muscles, ease tension, and reduce headaches. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of uses for these oils. The best way to really learn about these uses is to jump in feet first and try them out for yourself.
How to Use Essential Oils
How you use essential oils will mostly depend on what you’re planning on using them for. If you’re looking for stress relief or to have a relaxing evening, you could try adding a few drops of lavender to a hot bath. When you’re looking for an energy boost, you could make a face spritzer using a blend of lemon and grapefruit oils. If you’re looking for something to help make you sleepy, then you could try drinking tea with chamomile. You have countless options.
Topical application is one popular form of reaping the benefits of essential oils. Anytime you’re planning on using oil directly on your skin though, you should test a small area first. This way you can make sure it’s not going to do any skin damage and that you’re not allergic to it. Generally speaking, you’ll want to dilute the oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut, jojoba, or almond oil. Directly applying oils can be great for your skin and hair.
Oils can also be ingested, which is another popular way of using them. Not all oils are safe for consumption, though, so make sure you know what you’re doing before you ingest any of them. You can consume oils by drinking them with water or tea, adding a drop or two on top of your food, or using them when cooking and baking. Olive oil and lemon oil can be mixed together to make a nice marinade.
Inhaling essential oils is perhaps the most common way of using them. They can be directly inhaled or put into a diffuser. Using a diffuser will make your room smell amazing while still giving you the benefits from the oils. You can also make an air freshening spray, which could clean the air while making any room smell delightful.
A Few Additional Thoughts
Since they’ve been becoming more and more popular the market has been flooded with essential oils that aren’t up to par, so make sure you’re getting high quality oils. They may be more expensive, but your results will be much, much better. Plus, some companies end up removing the most beneficial parts of the oil in order to accentuate a different aspect.
I used to purchase all of my oils from NOW Foods, because they were easily accessible. Overall I would say I’ve been satisfied with them, but I have had some instances where the product was not quite the quality I was hoping for. However, I was introduced to Young Living recently, and there’s no question in my mind that the quality is better. I was amazed by how effective their oils were. I’ve only briefly looked into their massive selection, but I became an independent distributor and plan to learn more.
Many oils can be used in conjunction with each other to provide a stronger, more effective experience. Blending requires some patience and a little know-how, but it can definitely be worthwhile. If you don’t want to mess around with blending your own essential oils, you can find pre-blended concoctions from different companies.
If you’re curious about essential oils but not enough to want to spend a hefty sum, I suggest trying a starter pack of some kind. You can try out a few oils to see what works for you. I know I’m beyond glad that I started using essential oils. Hopefully you will be as well.
