The Pick of the Week for Nov. 12 – Nov. 19 is an aromatherapy essential oil diffuser from Mijoyee. I chose this particular model because I’ve personally owned and used it for roughly five months now, so I can speak to how it performs. I feel confident enough in this diffuser to recommend it to anyone interested in aromatherapy.
Over the past few years, I’ve dabbled with essential oils. It wasn’t until more recently, however, that I got serious about them. They’re amazing! Using them with my aromatherapy diffuser has been a great experience, and I believe everyone stands to benefit from aromatherapy.

What is Aromatherapy?
Simply speaking, aromatherapy is the use of aroma to enhance one’s well-being. This isn’t completely inclusive, however. More specifically, aromatherapy is the use of aromatic or volatile plant extracts to enhance or improve your physical and psychological well-being. It is perhaps most commonly associated with the use of essential oils.

Aromatherapy has evidence that traces back over thousands of years, though the term itself didn’t come around until 1937. Ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, India, and China all used different forms of aromatherapy. These civilizations wore oils as perfume, used them to embalm the dead, and burned the plants as incense. Some civilizations, such as the Persia, even invented rudimentary distillation machines in order to extract the oils.
In the past, figures such as Hippocrates (the “father of medicine”), Theophrastus (student of Aristotle), and Dioscorides (military physician) used and studied aromatherapy for medicinal purposes . Skin contact (usually via massage or bath), consumption, or inhalation of fumes were all means of obtaining the medicinal benefits of aromatic plants extracts.
Benefits of Aromatherapy
The belief that aromatherapy has many benefits for both your body and your mind is one that has long been held. Among the most popular of these benefits is stress relief. Certain essential oils contain compounds that act as relaxants. These compounds may be able to help eliminate anxiety and soothe mental stress.
Some therapists use aromatherapy in conjunction with counseling to help alleviate feelings of depression. It’s also sometimes used as a supplemental or alternative treatment for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, since some oils have shown the ability to help enhance memory capacity for a short time.
Another of the great benefits of aromatherapy is the energy boost it can provide. The essential oils can act as a stimulant for your body and mind. They can also help increase circulation, speed up the healing process, and help eliminate annoying headaches. Aromatherapy is a truly versatile form of alternative medicine.
Why I Love my Aromatherapy Diffuser
I try to use my diffuser every day, but sometimes the water runs out and I’m too lazy to refill it. It provides just the right amount of soothing light when I do yoga before bed, and the smells are wonderful. Even the sound of the motor, which is slight, has a lulling and pleasant effect. I’m definitely a big fan of the whole thing.
Now, I can’t say for sure that I have the best aromatherapy diffuser in the world, because that would be a ridiculous and highly opinionated claim. I do think it works beautifully, though. The one I own has a dark wood grain appearance, which is my preference, but it has a lighter version as well. You can set it to cycle through a series of seven colored lights, or you can choose to remain on one steady light. Being the indecisive person I am, I almost always have them rotate.
The lights are by far one of my favorite features of the diffuser. I also like that it has timer settings. I can either turn it on indefinitely or set it for one, three, or six hours. After the time is up, it shuts itself off. It will also shut itself off if it runs out of water, which is a nice feature for the forgetful. You can also choose between a light mist and a heavy mist.
The one thing I would change about this aromatherapy diffuser would be to have the lights shut off automatically with the mist. They do shut off when it runs out of water but will remain on otherwise. A timer for the lights would be a nice addition. Then you really wouldn’t have to give it any thought once you’ve set it up.
While aromatherapy certainly isn’t a cure-all, it does have plenty of worthwhile qualities. I’ve personally experienced and enjoyed the benefits of aromatherapy. My diffuser has been very satisfying overall. It’s a great addition to my life.
